Robert Pershing Wadlow was the tallest human being who ever lived.He was born at Alton Illinois and weighted a normal 8 pounds 6 inches during birth his rapid growth was due to a condition known as hyperlasia of his Pituitary gland this condition led to an abnormal level of human growth hormone.
He became taller than his father by the age of 8 measuring 6 feet two inches.At the age of 13 measuring 7 feet, 4 inches, he was the world’s tallest Boy Scout.
By the age of 18, he had reached eight feet, four inches tall, and weighed 390 pounds. His dresses required the amount of cloth that would be enough for three normal persons and his shoes sized 37AA cost a hundred dollars a pair which was a lot of money back in the 1930's.
Robert became a celebrity after his 1936 U.S. tour with the Ringling Brothers Circus. In 1938, he did a promotional tour with the International Shoe Company. They provided him his shoes free of charge.He was a quiet and mild-mannered young man, which led to him be called a gentle giant.
He enjoyed photography and playing guitar until his hands grew too large to do either.He broke the record for world’s tallest man when he reached 8 feet, 4 inches in 1937.While appearing at a forest festival a faulty brace irritated his ankle which caused a blister and a subsequent infection.Doctors tried to save his life with an emergency surgery but his condition worsened due to an autoimmune disorder, and 11 days after contracting the infection, he died in his sleep at a very young age of 22.He reached 8 ft 11.1 in height and weighed 490 pounds at his death at age of 22.He showed no indication of an end to his growth even at the time of his death.
